John William Colenso (1813-1883).
Tutor, rector and Bishop of Natal.
He compiled a Zulu grammar and dictionary and wrote the New testament in the
Zulu language. Bishop Colenso was an opposer of the traditional views about the
bible and wrote several treatises on the question which made him a controversial
Bishop. Bishop Gray of Cape town excommunicated him but Colenso stayed Bishop
for he could not be dismissed on legal grounds.
