Son of Archduke Franz Karl and Princess Sophie von Bayern.
He married three times: 1st In 1856 with Margaretha of Saxony.
2nd in 1862 with Princess Maria Annunciata of Bourbon - Two Sicilies.
3rd in 1873 with Maria Theresa of Portugal.
